Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans are standardized by the federal government — Plan G from Carrier A covers the same benefits as Plan G from Carrier B. What differs is the premium, the carrier's financial strength, and its history of rate increases.
AM Best ratings measure an insurance company's financial strength and ability to pay claims. Ratings range from A++ (Superior) to D (Poor). When comparing carriers, look for ratings of A- or better.
Rate stability is equally important. Some carriers offer low introductory premiums and then raise rates aggressively. Ask your broker for the carrier's rate increase history over the past 5–10 years.
An independent broker works with multiple carriers and can compare premiums, ratings, and rate histories side by side — at no cost to you. A captive agent can only show you one company's products.
