What Is Medicare Advantage?
Medicare Advantage (also called Medicare Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans bundle your Part A (hospital), Part B (medical), and usually Part D (prescription drugs) coverage into one plan — often with extra benefits like dental, vision, and hearing.
Medicare Advantage plans must cover everything Original Medicare covers, but many offer additional benefits at little or no extra premium.
Types of Medicare Advantage Plans
Generally requires you to use a network of doctors for covered services. Some HMO plans require referrals to see specialists while others may not — members should review their specific plan rules.
Best for: Those who want lower costs and don't mind staying in-network.
Generally allows members to receive covered services from both in-network and many out-of-network providers, although out-of-network care usually costs more and providers must be willing to accept the plan. Referrals are typically not required.
Best for: Those who want flexibility to see specialists without referrals.
Allows members to receive care from providers who agree to accept the plan's payment terms. Provider participation should always be confirmed before receiving services.
Best for: Those in rural areas or who travel frequently.
