Most people who receive SSDI become eligible for Medicare after receiving disability benefits for 24 months. Medicare eligibility begins on the 25th month of SSDI entitlement — not the 25th month of receiving payments, which may differ if there was a waiting period.
You will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B when you become eligible. You will receive your Medicare card approximately 3 months before your coverage begins. If you do not want Part B (because you have other coverage), you must actively decline it.
People with Medicare due to disability have the same plan choices as those who qualify at 65: Original Medicare with a Medigap supplement and Part D, or Medicare Advantage. However, Medigap availability for people under 65 varies by state. Florida law requires insurers to offer at least one Medigap plan to Medicare beneficiaries under 65, but premiums may be higher.
If you have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease), different Medicare eligibility rules apply. ESRD and ALS beneficiaries may qualify for Medicare before the standard 24-month waiting period.
When you turn 65, your Medicare coverage continues without interruption. You will have a new opportunity to enroll in or change Medigap plans with guaranteed-issue rights in most states.
What to Do Next
Confirm Your Medicare Start Date
Your Medicare eligibility begins on the 25th month of SSDI entitlement. Verify your exact start date with Social Security.
Review Part B Enrollment
You are automatically enrolled in Part B. If you have other creditable coverage, you may be able to decline Part B without penalty.
Explore Medigap Options Under 65
Florida requires at least one Medigap plan be available to under-65 Medicare beneficiaries. Compare options with an independent broker.
Add Part D Coverage
Enroll in a Part D drug plan when your Medicare begins to avoid the late-enrollment penalty.

What Clients Say
"I contacted William to assist my wife and I after moving to Florida from another state. He contacted us immediately and scheduled a phone appointment for the following week. We spent about an hour getting to know each other and our needs. He recommended several companies to match our needs and our location here in FL that we would NEVER had figured out on our own. Praise the Lord for Bill and for his help!! I would recommend him to anyone and everyone!!"
