Retiring: Your Medicare Transition Checklist
Retirement is one of the most common triggers for Medicare enrollment decisions. Whether you are retiring at 65 or later, the steps you take in the months before and after retirement determine your coverage and your costs for years to come.

If you are retiring at 65, your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is already open or approaching. Enroll in Medicare Parts A and B during your 7-month IEP to avoid late-enrollment penalties.
If you are retiring after 65 and have been covered by employer insurance, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. You have 8 months from the end of your employment or employer coverage (whichever comes first) to enroll in Part B without penalty.
At retirement, you face a key decision: Original Medicare with a Medigap supplement and Part D drug plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan. Each path has different cost structures, network considerations, and flexibility trade-offs. An independent broker can model both options for your specific health situation and budget.
If your employer offers retiree health coverage, understand how it coordinates with Medicare before making any changes. Some retiree plans require you to enroll in Medicare Parts A and B to maintain your retiree benefits.
Do not forget Part D. Even if you take no prescriptions at retirement, enrolling in a Part D plan protects you from the late-enrollment penalty — which compounds at 1% per month for every month you go without creditable drug coverage.
What to Do Next
Confirm Your Enrollment Window
Determine whether you are in your IEP or qualify for an SEP based on your retirement date and employer coverage end date.
Evaluate Retiree Coverage
If your employer offers retiree health benefits, understand how they coordinate with Medicare before enrolling.
Compare Medigap vs. Advantage
Model both coverage paths with an independent broker before your retirement date.
Enroll in Part D
Add a Part D drug plan within 63 days of your Part B effective date to avoid the late-enrollment penalty.

What Clients Say
"I contacted William to assist my wife and I after moving to Florida from another state. He contacted us immediately and scheduled a phone appointment for the following week. We spent about an hour getting to know each other and our needs. He recommended several companies to match our needs and our location here in FL that we would NEVER had figured out on our own. Praise the Lord for Bill and for his help!! I would recommend him to anyone and everyone!!"
